Why we make refills

A pouch uses far less plastic than a bottle. Here is how our refills work, and what happens to the pouch.

Hands pouring a Kinfolk refill pouch into a frosted glass bottle

When we started Kinfolk, every product came in glass. Glass is beautiful, it keeps formulas stable and it lasts for years. But shipping a brand new bottle every time someone ran out of cleanser made very little sense, so after our first year we started working on refills.

How it works

  1. Keep your first bottle. Every Kinfolk bottle is made to be used for years, with a pump you can take apart and rinse.
  2. Order the refill when it runs low. The refill cleansing gel, refill balancing tonic and refill hand wash hold two fills each.
  3. Pour it in. Rinse the bottle with warm water, let it dry, and pour the refill in through the wide neck.
  4. Send the pouch back. Fold the empty pouch and put it in the box with your next order, or use the free return label in your account.

What happens to the pouch

Our pouches are made of a single layer of aluminium with a thin plant based lining, which means they can be fully recycled. Mixed material pouches, the kind most refills come in, cannot.

Every pouch that comes back to the studio is cleaned and sent to a recycling partner in Lombardy, where the aluminium is melted down and used again. Aluminium can be recycled endlessly without losing quality.

What it saves

  • Weight. A refill pouch weighs about a tenth of a glass bottle, so it takes far less fuel to ship.
  • Packaging. No new pump, no new box, no new label.
  • Money. Refills cost around 20% less than the same amount in a bottle.

We would rather you bought one bottle from us and refilled it for years than bought a new one every month.
