Inside the studio

Where Kinfolk is made, who makes it, and why every batch is small enough to fill by hand.

Every Kinfolk product is made in our studio outside Turin, in a former bakery that still has the original tiled floor. There are seven of us: two chemists, three people who make, fill and pack, and two who answer your emails and plan what comes next.

Small batches

We make each product in batches of a few hundred bottles. That means a formula is never sitting in a warehouse for months before it reaches you: most products are filled within six weeks of you opening them.

It also means we can change things quickly. When testers told us the first version of the body oil felt too heavy, we had a lighter one in the next batch.

Short ingredient lists

Our chemist Giulia Ferraro has one rule for every new formula: if an ingredient does not do a job you can feel or see, it does not go in. No fragrance, no colour, no fillers to make a product look richer than it is. Most of our formulas have fewer than fifteen ingredients, and each one is listed on the product page with what it does.

Testing

Before a product goes on sale, it is used every day for eight weeks by a panel of forty people with different skin types, including sensitive skin. We change the formula until it works for almost all of them. Face products are then checked under dermatological supervision.

Visiting

The studio is not a shop, but we open the doors on the first Saturday of every month. Come and see how the products are made, try anything you like, and bring your empty bottles to refill on the spot.
